Dalhousie University is seeking a Senior Associate Dean to provide academic, financial, administrative, and strategic leadership for Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine campus in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) is one of the two campuses of Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine.  The main administrative office is located on the University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus on traditional Wolastoqey territory. The river that runs by the DMNB building, the Wolastoq River, is also known as the Saint John River, along which settled the Wolastoqiyik – the people of the beautiful and bountiful river. DMNB is supported by a strong partnership between Dalhousie and the University of New Brunswick.  The main administrative office is located on the University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus in Saint John, NB.   DMNB offers a continuum of education programming for a minimum of 40 students per year over the 4-year undergraduate program.  In addition, there are six New Brunswick based postgraduate residency training programs and additional core clinical rotations are provided through the postgraduate training programs based in Halifax. Clinical teaching is provided by over 650 faculty distributed throughout the clinical teaching sites and supported by local staff and academic leadership in five regional facilities in the Horizon Health Network. The biomedical research facility, has a distributed graduate studies program, led by four basic and health science scientists and two research Chairs. Continuing professional development is provided to all faculty regardless of geography.

The Senior Associate Dean will be responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the academic mission and achieving the objectives associated with the Faculty of Medicine’s four strategic streams (Educational Excellence, High-impact Research, Serving and Engaging Society, and Valuing People) in New Brunswick.  The Senior Associate Dean will provide comprehensive leadership for all activities and programs delivered by the Faculty of Medicine in New Brunswick, including undergraduate medical education, postgraduate medical education, research, and continuing professional development.  Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, the Senior Associate Dean will be the Dean’s representative, agent and spokesperson in New Brunswick.  This position is also responsible for building community relationships and partnerships of benefit to DMNB and to the health of New Brunswickers within the province and beyond including with government departments, health care networks, other universities, and health education and research institutions.

The successful candidate must have a medical doctorate or equivalent degree alongside a minimum of five years of experience in a senior leadership position in a clinical or health education setting. A graduate degree in Medical Education, Research or Business Administration would be an asset. Experience in team leadership and management of financial and human resources are also required. The ideal candidate will come to the role with a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of medical education and research principles and practice. They must also have strong facilitation, presentation, and negotiation skills as well as demonstrated success collaborating effectively across and building strong relationships with diverse stakeholder groups and within community. Finally, it is essential that the candidate bring a breadth of experience and proven leadership related to issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

This is a five-year, renewable term. The successful applicant will also be offered a continuing academic appointment in the department. The Senior Associate Dean position is subject to renewal for a second five-year term, conditional on satisfactory annual performance evaluations and a positive review of the first term as Senior Associate Dean.
