The physician liability premium (PLP) rebate reimburses physicians for part of the cost of their liability coverage, which in most cases is provided by the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
Effective Jan. 1, 2017, the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) assumed responsibility for administering the PLP rebate program.
To be eligible for the PLP rebate, a physician must:
- Pay liability premiums in excess of $1,750 per year
- Ask the CMPA (or their liability coverage provider) to provide their premium details to the DHW
As negotiated in the 2015 Master Agreement contract, the formula used to calculate physician liability payment rebates is as follows:
- To qualify: Physician must pay at least $1,750 per year for liability premiums
- Reimbursement: The DHW will reimburse physicians for 90% of the total premium paid, less the $1,750 base rate
Rebate payment schedule
MSI will issue rebate payments to eligible physicians. Payments are issued twice a year, continuing through the end of 2019:
- January 2018
- July 2018
- January 2019
- July 2019
MSI requires physicians to complete a Business Arrangement form and submit supporting banking information so that they may receive their reimbursement payments.
