The program offers two categories of benefits for eligible members. Your category depends on how long you have been a member of DNS. In two-physician families, both parents are eligible for parental leave.
Benefits for parental leave are accessible from the child’s birthdate, however eligible leaves may begin at a later date provided the weeks fall within 52 weeks from the child’s birthdate. Benefits for adoptive parents start from the date of taking over care of the child, providing the child is aged five or younger.
Earned income must be $1,000 or less per month while claiming parental leave benefits.
You are eligible for this category if you reside in Nova Scotia and have been a full dues–paying member of DNS for two consecutive years or one year as a resident with Dalhousie University followed by one year as a full dues-paying DNS member immediately preceding the leave.
Benefits paid will be up to a maximum of $1,000 per week for 17 consecutive weeks. The benefit amount is based on 50% of income earned in the 12 months immediately preceding the leave. Apply for parental or adoption leave.
This category applies to physicians residing in Nova Scotia who have been full dues-paying DNS members for six to 24 months immediately preceding the leave. Time spent as a resident with Dalhousie University doesn’t count towards eligibility for this option.
Benefits paid will be up to a maximum of $500 per week for 17 consecutive weeks; the benefit amount is based on 50% of income earned in the six to 12 months immediately preceding the leave.
