Doctors Nova Scotia members can take advantage of a variety of opportunities for leadership development.

Physician Leadership

There are many leadership training opportunities for physicians, including two-day Physician Leadership Institute (PLI) courses. Physicians interested in more in-depth training may apply to participate in the longer-term Physician Leadership Development Program (PLDP). Read more

You may also choose to access resources available from partner organizations to both develop your leadership skills or to maintain your certification.

Nova Scotia Health 

The NSH’s Leadership Learning Resource Centre is a series of websites with educational resources focused on a number of leadership topics, including change management, systems thinking and conflict competence. Each site has resources organized based on the level of engagement with the topic and time commitment; you can choose to have a 10-minute, high-level overview, or take a deep dive with in-depth resources. All of the resources are either free or accessible via NSH Library Services subscriptions.

Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine

The Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine has introduced a program in academic leadership for clinical and basic science faculty: Emerging Leaders in Academic Medicine. The program provides an opportunity for faculty with limited leadership experience to become more familiar with the functioning of the medical school and acquire knowledge and skills to take on expanded roles in their academic settings.

CMA PLI

CMA PLI offers a comprehensive suite of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, including: an annual conference, Physician Leadership Institute (PLI) courses and an executive credential, all designed to meet the leadership needs of physicians throughout their careers.

It also has launched short, complimentary, on-demand accredited learning to build foundational leadership skills in physicians and their teams. Modules include: Building self-awareness and personal mastery, Communicating effectively, Practical strategies for engaging health care teams and Foundations of physician wellness.
