Why having a family doctor is good for your health

Dear editor:

I believe that all Nova Scotians should have a family doctor and as a result, have access to the best possible care to live a happy and healthy life.

In fact, research tells us that people who have a family doctor have a better quality of life. Having a family physician improves health outcomes for a number of different reasons, one being the unique relationship that develops between a doctor and their patient.

The doctor-patient relationship is special. Growing and strengthening over many years, it allows family physicians to become well acquainted with a patient’s medical history – contributing to an exceptional level of care in important areas like chronic disease management and mental health.

By continuing to seek necessary and continuous care, family doctors are able to maintain close knit relationships with their patients, allowing them to benefit from the many positive aspects that make up continuity of care.

It permits family doctors to provide a range of health care services for their patients outside of the office practise. They provide care where it’s needed and when it’s needed the most by visiting patients in the comfort of their homes, care facilities like nursing homes, walk-in-clinics, emergency departments, palliative care units, and inpatient care.

In addition, research tells us that chronic disease patients who access care through their family doctor have fewer hospital stays and fewer trips to the emergency department. Not only does the patient have better health outcomes, access is improved for other patients who need a hospital bed or emergency services. The patient wins and so does the health-care system.

That’s why we believe every Nova Scotian should have a family doctor.  This is based on best evidence for the preferred model of comprehensive primary care for all.
