Doctors to meet with elected officials about federal tax changes

Nova Scotia’s physicians will meet with provincial and federal elected officials on Saturday to share their concerns about proposed federal tax changes on private corporations.

Doctors Nova Scotia President, Dr. Manoj Vohra, will share results of a recent survey on how the province’s physicians will be affected if the tax changes are implemented. Approximately 75 percent of Nova Scotia’s physicians are incorporated and will experience the effects of the changes.

Physicians will be invited to share their stories on how the tax changes will affect them personally and their concerns for patient care in Nova Scotia.

The tax changes are one more factor that will cause physicians to leave Nova Scotia or make it difficult to attract them here in the first place.

A physician shortage will impact patient care in an environment where patients are struggling to access basic primary care services and there are long waits for specialist services.

Physicians are concerned for themselves, but more importantly they’re concerned for their patients. Nova Scotia has a sick, old and overweight population and physicians are concerned for their future.

The meeting is open to members of the media.
