Medical Consultants: Department of Health and Wellness
The Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) is seeking an experienced physician to serve as a Medical Consultant, working alongside an existing consultant to provide expert clinical and policy advice across a wide range of health initiatives and insured programs. The consultant advises senior leadership, including the Deputy Minister and Minister, and works collaboratively with health system partners.
This role supports the development and application of provincial policies affecting physicians and the health system and provides clinical insight and support into areas of compensation, audit, physician billing and insured health benefits.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Providing clinical expertise to inform departmental policy and decision making.
- Assess requests for new/revised billing fees.
- Evaluate out-of-province or out-of-country referrals for eligibility as needed.
- Representing DHW on committees focused on insured services, clinical standards, and technology advances.
- Provide advice to negotiating teams.
- Advice on billing practices, audit processes, fee structures and related program and clinical areas.
- Support the implementation of the Physician Services Agreement through joint committees with Doctors Nova Scotia.
- Collaborate with key partners such as Health Authorities, Medavie, College of Physicians & Surgeons, Doctors Nova Scotia, Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine.physician billing fees.
Qualifications and Experience
- Membership/Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in a medical or surgical specialty or College of Family Physicians.
- At least fifteen years of experience as a physician in clinical practice.
- Deep understanding of Nova Scotia’s health care system, physician compensation models and clinical billing practices. Familiarity with Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance system and associated legislation.
- Experience in health policy development, clinical audits, and economic evaluation.
- Experience in clinical audit and/or economic analysis.
Contract Details
This is a part-time contract position (up to 30 hours/week, 46 weeks/year) with remuneration based on the provincial sessional rate. The contract is for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
