They also help strengthen patient care, address system pressures and support innovation in healthcare across the province. While formal contract discussions have not yet been scheduled, early conversations with the Department of Health and Wellness about the negotiation process and timeline have been positive. Check back regularly for updates.

Member engagement

To inform the negotiations priorities, DNS delivered on an extensive member outreach strategy, including a member survey and 48 listening sessions, most conducted in person, along with several virtual meetings, including two province-wide sessions. These conversations brought together family physicians and specialists, physicians practising in urban and rural settings, academic physicians and groups historically underrepresented in medicine.

In addition to regional sessions, we held targeted discussions with internationally trained physicians, women physicians, the Section for Indigenous Health, the Section of Black Physicians and physicians who are new to practice. These focused conversations created space for more in-depth dialogue.

Economic report

As part of the negotiations preparations, DNS developed an environmental scan, surveying the economic factors that influence Nova Scotia’s healthcare system. Among other things, this report analyzes Nova Scotia’s physician compensation relative to that of other provinces.
