Dr. Mike Fleming takes reins at Doctors Nova Scotia
Dartmouth, NS – Doctors Nova Scotia installed Fall River-based family physician Dr. Mike Fleming as its new President during the association’s annual conference on Saturday, June 8 at Digby Pines Golf Resort & Spa.
“I am honoured to take on the role of President at a time when patients are depending on their physicians more than ever to advocate on their behalf,” said Dr. Mike Fleming.
Dr. Fleming’s priority as President is to advance health-care improvements for both patients and physicians.
Creating an environment where physicians are well supported and work within a health-care system that serves our patients is critical to successfully recruiting and retaining doctors,” said Dr. Fleming. “The first step to achieving this is ensuring physicians - known advocates for their patients - are at health-system decision making tables.”
Under Dr. Fleming’s leadership the association will also be entering into a number of contract negotiations.
“Contract negotiations open doors for us to be creative and innovative when it comes to supporting better patient care,” said Dr. Fleming.
“We need to acknowledge best practices in patient care and continue to evolve and look for ways in which our compensation models can be responsive to, rather than dissuade from, advancements in medicine,” he added.
Dr. Fleming was born in Montreal and lived in Toronto and Vancouver before settling in Halifax in 1967. He has practiced family medicine for the past 33 years at the Fall River Family Practice.
Dr. Fleming has been a leader in medicine for many years. He’s held a position on the Doctors Nova Scotia Board of Directors for the last seven years and has been the Director of Family Physician programs in the Continuing Medical Education office at Dalhousie University for nearly 32 years.
In his free time, Dr. Fleming enjoys spending quality time with his family, skiing and kayaking and playing golf. He also enjoys spending time at his wife’s family farm in Prince Edward Island.
