The book charts the experiences of three generations of Nova Scotia country doctors, whose combined practices spanned the twentieth century. Dr. Cogswell shares stories of his maternal grandfather, who practised at the turn of the century, travelling by horse and sleigh, and of his own father, who opened a home office in the 1930s. Exploring how his entire life has revolved around medicine, Dr. Cogswell delves into his own memories of growing up in a doctor’s home, his time at med school and what inspired him to open up his own family practice in 1963.
