Kids Run Club

Kids Run Club is a free, school-based running program designed to help children and youth lead more active lives. Here’s what you need to know about the program.

The Kids Run Club is available free of charge to schools and community groups in Nova Scotia. Each year, more than 17,000 kids from more than 200 schools and groups across the province take part in the program.

Kids Run Club instils the importance of regular physical activity in children so they form healthy habits that become part of their everyday lives as adults.

A leader in Canada

Doctors Nova Scotia was the first medical association in Canada to offer a free running program to schools. The program has been replicated in Alberta and Ontario.

In addition to offering Kids Run Club, Doctors Nova Scotia sponsors several youth runs, including the Youth Run at the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon in Halifax. Over 3,300 kids participated in the 2017 Youth Run, making it the largest run in Blue Nose history and one of the largest in Canada.

National recognition

Doctors Nova Scotia has received two national awards for the Kids Run Club:

  • 2006 Health Promotion and Innovation Award of Excellence from the Canadian Institute of Child Health
  • 2012 Ron Draper Health Promotion Award from the Canadian Public Health Association

In 2017, Kids Run Club won the Partnership Award from the Nova Scotia Teachers Association for Physical and Health Education.

These awards wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who give their time and energy to implement the program in communities across the province.

The program

  • Available to all schools/groups in Nova Scotia
  • Kids Run Club can be implemented as an extra-curricular program or during class time to support learning outcomes
  • Girls-only program also available
  • Accessible walk/jog approach allows everyone to participate; experience with running isn't required
  • School groups run together up to three times each week
  • Participants build their endurance in order to complete a final fun run of 2.1, 4.2 or 5 km; a KRC running log allows participants to track their progress
  • A Runner’s Handbook gives participants the information they need to start running and lead an active, healthy life
  • All participants receive a finisher’s prize at the conclusion of KRC
  • The Healthy Living Challenge, offered as a complement to the running program, encourages participants to eat well, stay active, and reduce screen time

The participants

  • Students in elementary, junior high and high schools across the province
  • Group size can range from just a few runners to more than 100
  • Participants are encouraged to celebrate their hard work by taking part in a youth run like the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run in Sydney or the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon in Halifax
  • KRC can be tailored to non-school groups. Contact the program coordinator to find out more.

The coaches

  • Coaches can be school staff, parents, peer leaders or community members
  • The number of coaches required depends on the size of the group, the age of the participants and the type of running route
  • It’s ideal to have several adults involved to ensure safety and motivate participants
  • School staff are encouraged to recruit parent and community volunteers
  • Coaches receive a Coach’s Handbook and a form letter which can be customized and sent home to parents
