Since 2009, midwifery has been regulated in Nova Scotia, and at present, such services are exclusively offered at three sites: Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg, IWK Health Centre in Halifax and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish.
Cape Breton does have one midwifery service operating out of Inverness since October 2024, which does provide such perinatal services.
But it’s part of what’s described as an “Allied Health Care Practitioners pilot project,” said Barb Johnson, a spokesperson with Doctors Nova Scotia, the professional association representing all physicians in the province.
“It was/is funded through the 2023-27 physician agreement negotiated between Doctors Nova Scotia and the Department of Health and Wellness.”
