Get Active

Being healthy means more than just avoiding visits to your doctor. It means adopting a lifestyle built on physical activity and healthy eating.

"Get moving, get active" are messages we hear constantly these days and for good reason. Too many of us spend too much time sitting and not enough time moving, both at work and play.

How bad is it?

  • Nova Scotia has one of the highest rates of obesity in Canada.

  • 63 per cent of Canadians are considered inactive.

  • 87 per cent of Canadian youth aren't active enough to get health benefits.

  • 58.8 per cent of Canadian adults were either overweight or obese in 2004.

  • Childhood obesity has almost tripled over the last 25 years.

  • The average amount of screen time (TV, video games and computer use) for Nova Scotia youth is 4.79 hours a day, not including time spent in school or at work.

Staying active is important for everyone, regardless of age and not just for losing weight. Children and youth need to be active in order to grow and develop properly and to have fun. Physical activity for adults is important for keeping the strength and mobility needed to complete daily activities and to maintain independence during senior years. Follow the side links to learn some different ways for you and your family to be active.

Now get out there and get active! You owe it to yourself.
